I am not for returning Derpy’s name. I honestly don’t give two shits about what she’s named. She could be named Bubbles McFartypants of Leeroy for all I care.

I’m just saying that there are still tons of children’s shows that portray mentally handicapped people in a humorous and ridiculing way and I think the bigger issue here is that nothing’s done about these shows. What exactly made Derpy any different from these characters?

Note: I haven’t seen what’s being talked about outside of what everyone else has posted and said.

Well the main difference between her and, say, Homer, is you look at Homer and he seems pretty normal.. Well aside from being a yellow cartoon man.  You don’t automatically think “Retarded” when you see him. Same as Peter Griffin from Family Guy.

“Derpy” was shown and drawn in a comically hanidcapped way, sounded a comically handicap way and was played off as a joke as a comically handicapped way.

Also most other of these children show “handicapped” people are actually just ‘normal’ people who so happen to be complete idiots. Not handicapped as such, but just lacking any normal thought process.. normally due to watching too much T.V. Kind of self made idiots.  While Derpy, in her orginial Derpy form, was defiantely handicapped and it was being played for a laugh.

As another note Just because other people/shows done it in the past doesn’t mean its okay. You can’t change things if you say “Well they did it in the past and no one stopped it then.”  And they have to Start somewhere right?  If it started on one of those shows would you then say “Well My Little Pony got away with it.”

I think Derpy was a real “three strikes and your out” kind of scenario. If they took out her voice, her eyes, or her clumsiness she’d gotten away virtually scott free. Any one of them. She’d just be a googly eyed character with a silly voice, or a googly eyed klutz with a normal voice, etc. She hit all three marks though and it’s pretty easy to see how it could offend people. Oh and to make it worse, her name is Derpy, so that’s four things. Yikes.

Personally I saw her similarly to Ed from Ed, Edd, and Eddy, or Disney’s Goofy and it really didn’t me. But artwork is subjective, and I completely understand why people would be offended from someone else’s perspective.
